Injured Hungarian Striker Varga Stable In Hospital After Horrific Collision

Injured Hungarian striker Varga stable in hospital after horrific collision

The 25-year-old suffered broken bones to his face but is in a stable condition.

Hungary players paid tribute to their injured teammate after the match.

Hungary forward Barnabás Varga was in hospital in stable condition Thursday after he was stretchered off the pitch in the country's Euro 2024 match against Scotland.

Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall in the 22nd minute of the match and was left unconscious on the field. He was given oxygen and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with broken bones to his face.

The Hungarian Football Federation said in a statement that Varga is "stable and conscious" and will remain in hospital for observation. The federation did not provide a timetable for his return to action.

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai said after the match that he was "shocked" by the injury and called for a change to medical protocols.

"I think we need to change the medical protocols," Szoboszlai said. "We can't have players lying on the field for 10 minutes. It's not good for the players, it's not good for the game."

Varga's injury is a major blow to Hungary, who are already without several key players due to injury. The team is scheduled to face Croatia in their next match on Sunday.
